What a great day out on the River Test with Orvis’s Richard Mathewson. We spent the day taking on Grayling and learning techniques on how to catch them on fly equipment. We had great weather, enthusiastic class, world class instruction, great winter lunch, and stunning countryside. I would highly recommend this course to anyone wanting to learn fly fishing technics for grayling.

Hi Richard, Thank you very much for your your email with the useful tactics guide and also for taking the time on a Sunday to run the “Orvis Learn to Fly Fish 201” course. I really enjoyed my day in the countryside at the Holbury Lakes venue. Coffee and Danish on arrival followed by a mornings excellent casting tuition. Gosh do I need to practice more ! 

I learnt a lot, and felt that by the lunch break I was beginning to understand some of the basics of the overhead cast. Immediately forgotten though in the afternoon when the nerves and adrenaline kicked in on seeing real trout in the water. However much to my astonishment, and probably your too, I did with your help actually catch a fish. Thought I had lost it a couple of times when it was jumping out of the water, but the thrill of landing my first trout was amazing.   Thanks once again for a superb day ! Kind regards, John

The facilities and surroundings were perfect, the beat was beautiful and Richard has taught me so much, more than I ever knew in my last 20 years of fly fishing, so much so I feel rejuvenated, have upgraded my equipment and can’t wait to get out fishing again.

You have given me an amazing memory and the skills to properly enjoy fly fishing as it was meant to be.

I will be back and I will tell others about you too, I hope you have a great weekend and a successful season.

I’m writing to say a great big thank you to Richard. I had a morning learning, practising, forgetting and doing yesterday. He collected me from Stockbridge and at the Mill the lessons began.

He’s a very patient teacher with the ability to impart in our time together what I think was just a small fraction of his fishing knowledge. Plus being aware of how best to remind his client that ‘that’s not the way to do it’. Followed by gentle reminders of what we had discussed and done three minutes ago.

After a coffee we then went fishing. Over the next two and a half hours, the sun shone, the breeze did its variety act and I caught two fish  and missed three more. It was a truly enjoyable experience, so please pass on my thanks to Richard.

A big thank you to you and your team for a fab day on Timsbury 5.

Richard was an excellent Ghillie and talked us through the beat and best practices. He was fabulous with my youngest son who was fresh to the sport.

The wind was a bit tricky, but the carrier fished well. We had a couple of  brownies by the end of the day, both on the bbq for Sunday lunch.

I would just like to add how satisfied I was with the course and the instructor/guide.

Richard Mathewson is a credit to his profession. He was very knowledgeable, very patient and explained everything in an easy understandable way. 

I, and he were very pleased when I caught a lovely 2.5 pound brown trout on a fly I picked and tied myself. I would very much like to come back next year and possibly rent a guide for the day. If I do manage to come back then I would not hesitate to ask for Richard again.
